What the Ding-Dong Is Wrong With Using a Boat?

August 27th, 2007 by David | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

OK, let me see if I understand this properly.

Global warming, carbon emissions, environmental considerations, airplanes = guilt, yada-yada.

So now some company has come along with the biggest no-brainer in literally hundreds of years. Are you ready for this one?

Travel between islands in boats.

It sounds reasonable to me. Especially when those islands are the Hawaiian Islands, and for many recent years, the only way to travel between them was by airplane. Then a company comes along, invests several zillion dollars in a state-of-the-art ferry with all kinds of environmental features including waterjet propulsion (no propellers, so no gashes in marine mammals), so that people can finally go between islands with their own cars instead of having to rent them, and guess what?

A bunch of supposed “environmentalists” file suit to stop the thing, and hold protests.

I know, nothing should surprise me any more. But it does make me wonder if the airlines had anything to do with the lawsuits, or if the “environmentalists” are also members of the Flat Earth Society, or what.

Fire Roasted Tomato and Olive Oil Triscuits!

I’m serious.

These things are amazing.

I don’t often run around telling people about new snack foods, but between this new flavor and the Deli-Style Rye Triscuits (especially with some nice margarine on ‘em), it’s a good thing we keep some protein in the house or I’d turn into a while wheat myself.

It Coulda Been Worse

In the last few weeks, we’ve noticed that it was becoming increasingly difficult to tell Nightstar and Panther apart. While it’s true young Nightstar has put on weight, she really wasn’t stocky like Panther. On the other hand, Panther seemed to be shrinking. So off he went to our wonderful local vets.

We were warned that the test results might show anything from diabetes to kidney disease, based on their observation that he had lost 2 pounds in 2 months. We were worried, because he’s our oldest (and first!) cat.

Well, today we found out he has diabetes, and apparently we “caught it” before things got really bad. So we’re learning all sorts of new stuff and learning to give insulin shots (or “jabs” as they call it in England), and Panther is going to have to cut down on soft drinks and candy (only kidding!). And chances are he’ll be able to keep living with us for a long time, as long as we take care of him properly.

If you find yourself having to deal with feline diabetes too, we’ve found some really good resources at VeterinaryPartner.com and FelineDiabetes.com.
